Apparition Picked Up U.S. Rights To The Runaways

It’s no surprise that Apparition picked up all U.S. rights to Kristen Stewart vehicle The Runaways, which was fully financed by River Road and produced with Linson Entertainment. It’s the first Apparition/River Road theatrical collaboration (Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life, due in 2010, will be their second). The deal closed two weeks ago.

Here’s the deal. As excited as all of Stewart’s Twilight followers are at the prospect of seeing her as groundbreaking rocker Joan Jett—both Stewart-starrers The Runaways and Welcome to the Rileys are the most scheduled and visited films on the Sundance site—this is a low-budget indie movie made for less than $10 million. The music picture barely got finished in time to show fest programmers, and will be mixing right up to the delivery of a wet print at the festival, which opens January 21. The good news: Apparition chief Bob Berney can use the fest as a launch pad for the indie film’s March 19 release.  And yes, it looks like exec producer Joan Jett will do her best to perform there.

The Runaways goes back to the 70s when tough-as-nails Jett and her Southern California teenage bandmates (New Moon co-star Dakota Fanning plays sex-kitten Cherie Currie) were among the first hard-rocking all-girl bands. They actually flew to Tokyo to perform at age 15. Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) also stars as rock impresario Kim Fowley.

The R-rated movie is “definitely indie in style, filmed artfully and stylistically,” says Berney. “It’s edgy and rough, with female appeal for Stewart’s audience.” Adapted from Currie’s autobiography by Floria Sigismondi, the film was also directed by the music-videomaker (David Bowie, The White Stripes and Christina Aguilera). The film is produced by John Linson, Art Linson and Bill Pohlad.

Joan Jett says Kristen is an actress of weight!

This past year, we’ve seen Kristen Stewart transform into Joan Jett for her role in the upcoming The Runaways.

The real Joan Jett caught up with MTV at the red carpet premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon on Monday night to praise the 19-year-old actress. Check it:

On Kristen’s “Joan Jett” haircut: “I had a big smile. I thought she looked great. She really wore it well, with her body and the way she carried it. It was [weird]. It was like looking at a little sister.”

On getting to know Kristen: “I don’t know that she had specific questions, so much as she just observed me a lot. We talked; I would talk to her. She didn’t really have to ask me. I’d just dump on her my feelings about the Runaways: what it meant to me, what I thought we were trying to achieve, how I felt about girls playing rock and roll and stepping outside the box of what we were allowed to do in life, just that whole thing. And she’d listen to my accent and watch my body language. She’s an actress of weight, honesty, integrity and depth, and she’s very serious. She takes it as art.”

On using her own voice in The Runaways: “She’s singing. She’s definitely doing the singing, yeah. And during the filming, she was playing guitar. We went through it. I showed her the positions that I play — because some guitar players will use different hand positions on the boards — so I showed her how I played it, and she picked it up really well. I’m a lefty, too — not guitar-wise, but in my handwriting. So she switched that up too; she was writing with her left hand. She really, really embodied it.”

On watching Kristen’s past work: “I’d obviously heard about the movie [Twilight], but before she was cast as me, I hadn’t seen it. Of course, when she was cast as me, I wanted to see the movie, and I’ve seen everything she’s done. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was really entertaining, and I’m excited that she was cast as me in The Runaways.”

Joan Jett hopes Kristen film will be a runaway success.

Joan Jett and her creative and business partner Kenny Laguna are expressing optimism for “The Runaways,” the film based on the maligned but influential all-female rock band that Jett co-founded and led from 1975-79.

The film, which is partly based on Runaways singer Cherie Currie’s 1989 memoir “Neon Angel,” features “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart as Jett, Dakota Fanning as Currie and Michael Shannon as original producer Kim Fowley. It was directed by Floria Sigismondi and is currently in post-production, with a release planned for 2010.

“It was very surreal and hard to put a word on,” Jett, who executive produced the film and was on hand for the filming, tells “If anything it definitely made me smile. It reinforces my love for the band and the fact I think it was an extremely important band, regardless of our level of success in America. It just reinforces my love of the whole time and of the band and what we did and how it was implausible and improbable at the same time.”

And Jett hastens to explain that “The Runaways” is “absolutely not a biopic. It’s not fact-for-fact. What they did was basically take elements from the Runaways story and created a parallel narrative.”

Laguna adds that, “We’re hoping it will be great. They exceeded our expectations with the casting…Even if it’s not a huge movie, it’s going to have a colossal effect on young girls playing rock ‘n’ roll, for sure.”

Jett and Currie each coached their cinematic counterparts during the filming, and Jett was particularly impressed by Stewart, who came to the set almost immediately after wrapping the second “Twilight” film, “New Moon.”

“Kristen was so into it, into the whole vibe of doing this,” Jett reports. “I think she felt a weight and a responsibility to interpret it correctly. She was really serious about it and was watching me and asking me all sorts of question, from speech aspects to watching my body language, watching where I stood, watching my guitar playing. She really worked hard to get it right.”

The Runaways were previously the subject of a 2004 documentary “Edgeplay: A Film About the Runaways.”

Soundtrack details are currently being worked out for “The Runaways.” Jett, meanwhile, is considering releasing a new greatest hits album in 2010 that may include some of the new material she’s been working on.
